How Long Does It Take to Be Able to Take a Fist? My Realistic Fisting Timeline
When I started training to take my first fist, I had no idea how long it would take. Turns out, 9 weeks. Now, I want to be realistic with you. If you are prepping to take your first fist and you want to know how to prepare, how to train, and how long it should take, I can share my experience, but every body is different and it could take you longer or less time. But my hope is that you realize it’s not as big a deal as you may have worried it would be. And you might be able to take your first hand sooner than you thought. That being said, don’t rush it! If you do, you risk injuring yourself and that could set you back several months or even a year or more.
For context, I am 6’4″ and 225 lbs. I’m a big person with a large frame. And this probably gave me an advantage. So don’t be discouraged if it takes you a little longer than me. When I started this 9-week journey, the biggest toy I could take was a squishy dildo, 7 inches around at its girthiest point. And I could take it about 5 and a half inches deep. That was VERY challenging for me. I needed a long warm-up for it. And if it had been a firmer dildo, I wouldn’t have been able to fit it at all. But sure enough, 9 weeks later, I took my first human fist!
Now, this isn’t a one-size-fits-all fisting tutorial. It’s my personal timeline: the toys I used, the positions that helped, and what I’d tell anyone figuring out how to take a fist for the first time. Please learn from my story rather than trying to duplicate it. You aren’t a machine. Be kind to your body and work with it. And have fun! There’s only one first time. Enjoy the buildup.
How Long Does It Take to Be Able to Take a Fist?
Quick answer: How long it takes to be able to take a fist depends on where you’re starting, your body’s structure and size, and how often you practice. It took me 9 weeks of gradual anal stretching with dildos, plugs, cones, and vibrating toys. Some people get there faster, and many take longer. Let your body set the pace.
There’s no universal timeline. Here’s what my 9 weeks looked like.
Weeks 1 and 2
I practiced getting more comfortable with that original dildo (7 inches around, 6.5 inches long, and super squishy). I practiced about once every two days, although, to be honest, as a person with ADHD, it was hard to stick to a schedule. And I think that flexibility actually helped. Fisting is (for the most part) just as psychological as it is physical. And if you stress yourself out with a timeline, you’re likely to cause tension in your muscles. If you approach this like a journey you are going on with your new BFF (your booty), then you’ll help those involuntary muscles relax as you reinforce internal trust between your body and your mind.
By the end of the second week, I was able to comfortably insert the full toy after a short warm-up.
Between sessions, I also wore Snug Plugs around the house, starting with a size 4.
Weeks 3 and 4
I started using the Anal Fisting Trainer to get used to something firmer. It also has indented rings spaced one inch apart, so I could track my depth progress inch by inch. I also started introducing vibration to my hole alongside the Anal Fisting Trainer. I knew the Vibrating Silicone Hand Fisting Dildo was going to be the next move, so rather than buy a separate vibrator, I just held the vibrating fist against the Anal Fisting Trainer or pressed it against the outside of my hole while sitting on the Anal Fisting Trainer. And by the end of week 4, I was able to play with the Vibrating Hand even though I couldn’t get it in all the way.
I also introduced the Cone to measure how deep and wide I could get, but it was hard to get much depth with it at this point.
Why vibration? I am so glad you asked. As my friend Tugs Bunny (who helped me on this journey) points out, vibration overloads the nervous system which can have a muscle relaxing effect. Tugs is a licensed massage therapist and experienced vers fister. He knows the muscular system well!
Weeks 5 and 6
During these weeks, I got comfortable inserting the Vibrating Silicone Hand Fisting Dildo and sat deeper and deeper on the Cone. Tugs Bunny and I planned for his to be my first fist. So we measured his fist: the girth around the widest part and the depth from the tip of his middle finger to his wrist. The Cone was super helpful because I could clearly see my progress and I knew the ring I needed to get to in order to fit Tugs’s fist.
I also worked up to the Silicone Hand Fisting Dildo, which helped me prepare psychologically for a hand. Then I started playing with the Gape, but its thickest bulb felt impossible, and I began to fear I wouldn’t be able to do this.
Weeks 7 and 8
I got that Gape toy in all the way! I was so proud of myself. By now, a size 7 Snug Plug popped in and out fairly comfortably too. These two weeks took a lot of intentional focus on my relationship with my body. I would catch my brain being a jerk and telling me I would fail. I started imagining meeting up with Tugs and not being able to take it. I imagined us trying for an hour before giving up. Over and over, as these thoughts popped into my head, I reminded myself that anxiety like this is normal. But these worries are not the truth.
I kept practicing with all my toys and kept reminding myself that I am in control, my body is capable, I will listen to my body and not hurt it, and I will be kind to myself no matter how long this takes. And that helped tremendously.
Week 9 and Fist Day
The last week leading up to taking my first fist, I didn’t do a whole lot. I think I practiced once. The rest of the time, I practiced that self-talk and trusted that rest would be good for my body. Either it would work out, or we’d try again later.
Wouldn’t you know it, it took less than 5 minutes for Tugs Bunny to get his whole hand in me and it felt GREAT!
Now, how can you apply this yourself and what should you do to prepare for your first time being fisted?
How to Prep for Fisting Training
Start with the mindset that got me through: you’re in control, you can stop at any time, and there’s no deadline. Then the physical prep:
- Clean out. Ideally, have a bowel movement shortly before (within a couple of hours), then douche. b-Vibe’s guide on how to prepare for anal covers the details for douching. However, you may want to intentionally douche past your “second hole” (the bend where your rectum meets your colon, roughly 6 to 8 inches in) if you plan to work on depth during this training session. If your focus is girth only, then standard douching is plenty.
- Prep the toy. If you’re worried about a mess, protect your toy by putting a condom on it.
- Use a lot of lube. I prefer a thick, cushioning lube, and some of the best lube for fisting comes as a powder you mix with water. Silicone lube lasts longer, but it can break down silicone toys like the Snug Plugs, the Anal Fisting Trainer, and both hand dildos. Use water-based lube with those.
How to Relax Your Anal Muscles
You have two anal sphincters. You can squeeze and release the external one (commonly referred to as your butthole) on purpose. The internal one is run automatically by your nervous system, so it won’t open just because you want it to. But these tips can help you relax and open up:
- Push out. Gently bear down, like you’re starting a bowel movement, to release the external sphincter.
- Add vibration. As Tugs Bunny explained above, vibration helps those involuntary muscles let go.
- Wait instead of pushing harder. Hold steady pressure and give your body a moment to adjust.
How to Stretch for Fisting
Use my progression as a starting point and adjust it to your body:
- Start with the biggest toy you can currently handle. A squishy toy is much more comfortable than a firm one.
- Move to a toy with depth markers, like the Anal Fisting Trainer or the Cone, so you can see your progress.
- Add vibration with a toy like the Vibrating Silicone Hand Fisting Dildo.
- Work up to a hand-shaped toy like the Silicone Hand Fisting Dildo.
- Practice with a bulb-shaped toy like the Gape. The bulb will get you familiar with the sensation of popping a hand in and out. The bulb is like the knuckles, the most difficult part of a hand.
Between sessions, I recommend wearing Snug Plugs like I did. These are weighted silicone plugs in sizes 1 to 7. Each size roughly matches that many fingers. I’d wear one for about an hour while doing chores or walking my dog. If you get that urgent “I need to go to the bathroom” sensation, it’s time to take it out. It’s OK if you can only keep it in for seconds at first. Your body will adapt with practice.
| Snug Plug | Circumference | Weight | How it felt to me |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5.44 in | 256 g | Comfortable from the start |
| 5 | 6.19 in | 371 g | A stretch, but it felt good |
| 6 | 6.87 in | 515 g | #goals |
| 7 | about 7.9 in (2.5 in wide) | 600 g | Looked like it would take a miracle. By the end, it popped in and out fairly comfortably |
Best Fisting Positions for Training
- Sit on a suction-cup toy. The Cone, Gape, and both hand dildos stick to the floor, so you control the angle and pressure. I liked these best for solo training.
- Chest down, hips up. Kneel with your chest on the floor and your hips over your knees. This angle made insertion easier for me, but it’s difficult solo, so it works best with a partner.
How to Take a Fist for the First Time
- Pick an experienced partner. Someone who has fisted before knows the warning signs and can help keep you calm. Two beginners together raise the risk of injury.
- Measure their hand. Measure the girth around the widest part and the depth from the tip of the middle finger to the wrist. Then you know what to aim for in your training.
- Rest before the big day. Ease off in the final week and let your body recover, like I did. This is also a great time to prepare mentally. If you’re nervous, talk with your top. Just speaking anxiety out loud can significantly reduce it.
- Expect a hand to feel easier than a firm toy. Hands are softer and more flexible than toys of the same girth and length. You’ll probably be overprepared by the time you try your first hand.

Is Fisting Safe? Bleeding and When to See a Doctor
Fisting carries real risks, including tears and, rarely, a perforated bowel. A little pink or bright red spotting can happen from a minor tear or anal fissure, so give your body time to heal before you play again. Get medical care right away for:
- Bleeding that’s heavy, won’t stop, or is dark red, maroon, or clotted
- Severe or worsening belly pain
- Fever or chills
- A swollen, hard, or tender belly
Tell your medical provider exactly what you did. They’ve heard it before, and honesty gets you the right care faster.
Fisting FAQ
How long does it take to train for fisting?
It took me 9 weeks, starting from a squishy dildo 7 inches around. Starting from smaller toys can take several months. Consistent practice and rest days help more than pushing harder.
What size toy should I reach before fisting?
Aim for a toy close to your partner’s hand girth. Hands are softer than toys, so matching that girth with a firm toy should leave you well prepared.
Can you train for fisting solo?
Yes. Suction-cup toys you can attach to the floor or walls and wearable plugs make solo stretching much easier. For your first actual fist, choose an experienced partner.
